Bock

Bock beer is the seasonal beer of the Netherlands. Originally a German style from Einbeck, it is best known to us as autumn bock: dark, malty, and round, with notes of caramel, toasted bread, and sometimes a hint of dried fruit. Low bitterness, but a full body. In addition to autumn bock, there is spring bock, lighter in color and fresher, and double bock, heavier and fuller.

Do not serve bock beer too cold. Around eight to ten degrees, the malt and caramel come into their own best. It is a beer for autumn, with stew, game, mushrooms, or a piece of aged cheese. Our brewers' bocks are seasonal, and when they are gone, they are gone.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between autumn buck and spring buck?

An autumn bock is dark and malty, with caramel and roasted notes. A spring bock is lighter in color, fresher, and drier. Both have a solid malt base and little bitterness.

Is a winter bock the same as an autumn bock?

Almost. A winterbock is usually a bit fuller and heavier, for the coldest months. They have a malty base and low bitterness in common.

How cold do you serve bock beer?

Around eight to ten degrees. Too cold, and the malt and caramel won't release. A tulip glass or a goblet works well.

What do you eat with bock beer?

Stewed meat, game, mushrooms, and aged cheese. The caramel in the beer pairs well with roasted and stewed food. It also works with apple pie.

Why is bock beer only available for part of the year?

Bock is traditionally a seasonal beer. Brewers make an autumn bock for the fall and a spring bock for the spring. When it's gone, it's gone, and the next batch arrives the following season.

Never drunk a bock before? Don't serve it too cold and pair it with something hearty, and you'll understand why it makes a comeback every autumn.
